ECOLOGICAL SURVIVAL COLLECTION

TUNDRA

Located near the two poles and in alpine landscapes above the treeline, tundra is Earth’s coldest biome, characterised by low temperatures, permafrost, short growing seasons, and minimal precipitation. But despite icy appearances, sparse vegetation and hardy wildlife adapted to extreme cold do survive and thrive in the tundra – as have indigenous communities for millennia.

Tundra footwear needs to keep feet warm, and to prevent moisture from freezing inside. Grip and sensitive movement is also key for traversing icy surfaces.

TUNDRA FIELD NOTES

CLIMATE

- Harsh, freezing winters with regular snowfall and long nights
- Short, cool summers with long days
- Year-round permafrost, low precipitation, and strong winds

TERRAIN

- Snow and ice cover for most or all of the year, with glacial features
- Vast treeless landscapes with sparse vegetation
- Lakes, ponds, and marshes, frozen much of the year

FLORA AND FAUNA

- Hardy grasses, sedges, mosses, and lichens, plus berries in summer and small trees on the fringes
- Migratory bird species and summer insect blooms
- Arctic: hares, polar foxes, caribou, polar bears, and marine life
- Antarctica: penguins and marine life

CHALLENGES

With its extreme cold and sparse food resources, thriving in the tundra requires meticulous planning, specialised equipment, and cold-weather expertise. Expert knowledge is needed to utilise resources efficiently. Quality gear helps protect against the cold. Vigilance is essential when navigating thin ice or planning for potential polar bear sightings. And navigational skills are vital for traversing remote, barren, often blank landscapes.
