FEEL THE GROUND NOT THE COLD

Join John John Florence and Vivobarefoot’s founder, Asher Clark, in a conversation about feet, mobility, and recovery protocols to help maintain your physical and mental resilience — whether you're a mere mortal or a force of nature.

EXPLORING THE SCIENCE

IT ALL STARTS
WITH YOUR FEET

The kinetic chain is a sophisticated system of interconnecting joints and muscles that orchestrate seamless movement — and the feet are its foundation.

Subtle changes at the bottom of the chain send ripples upwards, profoundly impacting our posture, stability, and the overall efficiency of our movement, which is why strong feet are critical to optimal health

PERFECT FEET

THE SCIENCE
OF LOCOMOTION

The foot, which plays a dynamic role in walking, relies on three essential 'rockers': the heel rocker, the ankle rocker, and the forefoot (or big toe) rocker.

The human foot is designed to push off from the ball with the big toe providing leverage during the push-off phase. A flexible and strong big toe is crucial for healthy natural locomotion.

The foot has 200,000 nerve endings and serves as a crucial sensory organ. In fact, 70% of our brain’s information about movement comes from our feet.

MOBILITY

A critical factor to body mobility, stretching enhances flexibility, circulation, and range of motion. It also prevents injuries, promotes relaxation, and alleviates stress. John John’s personal key to achieving consistency in his stretching routine is to set attainable 10-minute goals. Below he runs us through his favourite poses and preferred stretching tools.

SWIM RUN

Swimrun is a unique endurance sport that requires participants to transition seamlessly between the water and the land. Originating in Sweden over twenty years ago, its popularity has grown globally due to its emphasis on teamwork, connection to nature, and the unique physical challenges it presents. Join John John and Vivobarefoot founder, Asher as they brave the waves and trails of Hawaii’s North Shore.

FOOT STRENGTH

With 26 bones, hundreds of muscles and ligaments, and thousands of nerves, the foot is a biomechanical masterpiece and unquestionably, our most capable piece of kit. Take off your socks and follow along as Asher runs John through a series of ‘toe-ga’ poses — exercises that improve the strength, flexibility, and mobility of the toes.

RECOVERY

John John swears by hot and cold immersion therapy as a key element to recovery. The practice, which entails alternating between a sauna and cold plunge pool, enhances circulation, promotes cardiovascular health, reduces inflammation and aids in muscle recovery. Just 57 minutes of sauna and 11 minutes of cold water exposure per week reduces the chance of heart failure by 50%.

SAUNA

When it comes to performing optimally, rest days are as critical as training days — especially for pro athletes like JJF. From early bedtimes and eating whole foods to honouring days off even when the North Shore is lit, John John talks through what rest means to him from the comfort of his home sauna.
