Contrary to common assumption, ESC isn’t just short for ‘escape’. (We’re more about embracing than escaping around here.) ESC stands for Ecological Survival Collection: our line of specialised bare-footwear built for Earth’s core biomes, where we find the most extreme expressions of climate, terrain, flora, and fauna.
 
We strongly believe that to thrive in wild places and as a species, we must work in harmony with nature, not against it. We are nature, and nature is us. Designed in partnership with leading survival experts, and pressure-tested in both the lab and the environments they’re meant for, the ESC range is built to thrive in the planet’s wildest places.

What does it take to build footwear that not only helps you explore in the world’s most challenging environments, but enables you to connect to yourself and nature on a deeper level? When Wilderness Skills Instructor Ben McNutt posed this ambitious question to Vivo Co-Founder Galahad Clark in 2013, it sowed the seeds for the Ecological Survival Collection.

 
Working with local communities and respected survival experts, our dedicated design team set out to create a footwear collection tailored to five core Earth biomes: forest, jungle, aquatic, tundra, and desert. For more than a decade, we have challenged conventions, learned from Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and examined how Vivobarefoot can contribute to the postcolonial awakening within exploration and the wider outdoor industry.
 
The result? Footwear built for navigating the planet’s toughest terrains with confidence, in harmony with nature. Footwear for connecting, not conquering.
