ECOLOGICAL SURVIVAL COLLECTION
AQUATIC
The aquatic biome, divided into marine and freshwater ecosystems, covers 75% of Earth. Marine ecosystems range from tropical reefs to frigid fjords and deep-sea trenches. Colourful, complex, and largely unknown, they are crucial sources of biodiversity, oxygen, and climate regulation. Freshwater habitats like rivers, lakes, and wetlands also house countless organisms, and provide water for drinking and agriculture.
Footwear for aquatic adventures must be amphibious. Protection from scrapes, quick drainage, lower water weight, and grip on slippery surfaces all enable coastal connection and exploration.

AQUATIC FIELD NOTES
TEMPERATE COASTAL CONDITIONS
CLIMATE
- Mild summers and cold winters, with possible snowfall.
- Evenly distributed precipitation throughout the year.
TERRAIN
- Rugged coastline dotted with rocky outcrops and some beaches.
- Cool to cold saltwater.
- Shoreline forests and marshland with sparse vegetation.
FLORA AND FAUNA
- Seaweeds, coastal grasses, and seasonal berries.
- Seabirds, seals, fish, and crustaceans.
- Shoreline mammals like hares, foxes, and deer.
CHALLENGES
Exploring Sweden’s archipelagos, via technical trails and choppy seas, is breathtaking and rugged. Coastal weather and sea conditions can change suddenly. Tides, currents, and waves all require skill and attention. Remote islands can be tricky to navigate and hard to reach. And the water can be cold.

AQUATIC BIOME
HYDRA ESC
The Hydra was designed for swimrun: the amphibious, adventurous combination of trail running and swimming. We primarily tested it throughout the Swedish archipelagos: the home and birthplace of the ÖTILLÖ SwimRun World Championship. The Hydra has since been adopted for a wide range of aquatic activities, and is a formidable trail shoe in its own right.
Its rugged Michelin© ESC sole grips slick shoreline terrain with barefoot sensitivity. Hydrodynamic quick-lacing allows easy adjustments. And the bio-based KPU upper, made with algae once choking up waterways, protects against rocks while gliding through the water, draining four times faster* than competitors, and gaining just 32%* of its dry weight after submersion.
