Soul of africa
hand-made in ethiopia, supporting local communities
Ababa is a simple shoe that pays homage to the original humans of the Rift Valley. Hand stitched in Ethiopia by Soul of Africa, a social enterprise facilitating the provision of employment, knowledge transfer and income generation through shoemaking, creating sustainable supply chains and supporting community projects.
Founded by the 6th generation shoemaker Lance Clark, Soul of Africa generated over $2 Million in wages and provided 18,000 children with education in South Africa.
Continuing Lance's legacy, Vivobarefoot supported a set-up of a new production line in Ethiopia in 2017 in collaboration with Pittards®, one of the biggest tanneries in Africa and producers of leather for gloving, fashion and footwear since 1826.

RECONNECT WITH AFRICA,
THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE HUMAN RACE.
Our widest, most minimalist shoe pays homage to the original humans of Rift Valley. Featuring the sole design inspired by the oldest footprints left on the Tanzanian soil over 3.7 million years ago.
PROUDLY MADE IN AFRICA
Hand stitched in Ethiopia, with every pair empowering their makers and supporting local communities.
Our shoes carry the Proudly Made in Africa award, meaning the products were independently verified for their quality, materials used and ethical production.
ETHIOPIAN WILD HIDE
The leather collection comes in Pittards Wild Hide, sourced from small-scale independent farmers in Ethiopia, treated in tannery that meets international safety and environmental standards. Supple, naturally-scarred leather is a full by-product of local livelihoods enabling the farmers to earn much-needed income.
providing sustainable employment supporting community projects
In Ethiopia, just 1 in 15 working age adults have a formal job, reducing to 1 in 20 for women. 71% of the population is under the age of 30. However, it is estimated that in Africa 1 finished product creates 5 employment opportunities throughout the supply chain. That is why, by making highest quality, ethically made products in Africa, value adding to the locally ourced materials creates a profound long-lasting positive impact.
Be selling the Soul of Africa range, VIVOBAREFOOT not only supports livelihoods but also donates over 20% of the cost of the shoe to Soul of Africa to continue its positive social impact.
