I was skeptical about buying these shoes as I was a firm believer that shoes need to be big with lots of support. From the first time I put them I was pleasantly surprised with the fit and comfort. I wear them daily at work and when out walking my dogs. They have quickly become the only footwear I want to wear. Definitely be buying another pair or two .
Firstly, I'm usually a size 11 but had to return my 11s after less than 50k as they were squashing my toes. I recommend going half a size up from your usual size.Secondly, these are designed to give you a barefoot experience, so they offer *zero* arch support and the 3mm rubber sole gives virtually zero cushioning. If you're after something spongy for tarmac heel-strike jogging, look elsewhere. If you're searching for something to correct over/under pronation then these are not the shoes you're looking for. Also, they're very very breathable as they're pretty much mesh construction, so if you're after something to keep your feet warm, these are not suitable. These are pretty specialist running shoes and they do exactly what they're designed to do very well indeed, and that is to allow the biomechanics of your foot to operate pretty much unhindered whilst protecting your skin from punctures and abrasions from thorns, twigs etc.I have found it fairly easy to transition to barefoot running with these over the past couple of weeks and am enjoying the versatility they provide. Whilst running in the woods recently I had to cross a wide river to get back to camp - I just yanked the lacing system tight to ensure they didn't get swept away and swam right across. By the time I got back to camp they were pretty much dry thanks to the airy design and non-absorbent materials. They also look very cool in a kind of ninja rock-climber way and can be worn casually with jeans etc. without looking too out of place.I'll be wearing these on a forthcoming climb of Snowdon's Crib Goch ridge - the flexibility and grip of the sole makes them perfect for clambering. They claim to be vegan and eco-friendly due to the use of non-animal, recycled plastic, which sounds nice :)If you buy the directly from the vivobarefoot website you'll benefit from the 100 day trial where you can return them for a no-quibble refund if for any reason you don't like them, regardless of how much you've worn them. Not sure if you'll be able to do that through Amazon or other outlets. Also, if you use this link, you'll get £25 off anything on the vivobarefoot website. What's not to love?http://bit.ly/2IDxTp5
