Frequently Asked Questions

If you can't find the answer below, please get in touch.

Our shoes have a patented puncture resistant layer that has up to 5x the puncture resistance of other minimal shoe brands out there. Sadly, it is not possible to make them puncture proof and maintain the barefoot flexibility and feeling. Learn more here (Learn more ‘link to attached page for thermal and puncture resistance)

Insoles are available to buy separately here. Each shoe will specify on its product page if it comes with our performance insole, everyday cork insole or our Thermal insole

Unfortunately, as we produce many different types of shoes, we are unable to stock additional laces for the products. If you receive your shoes with a faulty lace, we will of course replace the pair, but we are unable just to send spare/replacement laces on request. Although our laces are selected to perform and look damn good - any laces will work and a little customised lace selection will set your feet apart from the rest of the other barefootters!

The majority of our Leathers are now sourced from Pittards PLC and come from free roaming cows in Africa. You can find out more about the leather we use by visiting our Wild Hide or SUSTAINABILITY page.

FLEXIBLE SHOES - At VIVOBAREOOT we are committed to giving you as little shoe as possible while providing your feet with all the grip and protection you would expect from a pair of VIVOBAREFOOT shoes. Making soft, thin, flexible shoes that last longer and still allow for natural foot function, is our unique challenge.

LESS IS MORE - With less materials, thinner soles and complete flexibility; a huge amount of stress is put on the shoes during wear. This means we have to use the best materials and most considered shoe making process we can lay our hands on.

WE PAY MORE FOR LESS - In our China factories, it is common for shoe productions lines to make up to 3500 pairs per day. Our soft, thin, flexible shoes are a lot harder to make which limits us to below 1000 pair per day due to the level of shoe making and craftsmanship in each and every pair. We are a small company, with small orders and difficult to make shoes with industry defining quality standards.

Currently, we produce our shoes all over the world, from China and Cambodia, to Ethiopia and Portugal. We only work with factories who we believe can offer us the best possible construction, but who also follow our company code of conduct on human rights. Please read our Code of Conduct for more information.

Yes, but not for all of our shoes!

MAIN LINE – for the majority of our shoes we can’t offer a repair service, but if you are experiencing any faults then please get in-touch and we will honour our 6-month guarantee (if purchased directly from Vivo or one of our 3rd party retailers). As long as you have proof of purchase, we are happy to get a replacement pair out to you.

HAND CUT – we have dedicated shoe repair partners in all parts of the world.

To transform your Hand Cut shoes to their former glory, we will re-sole them, with appropriate Blake or Stichdown methods, using original outsoles from our Portugal Factory. We’ll fit new laces, polish and re-finish them, and send them back to you looking almost like new.

To arrange a repair*:

  1. Visit the VIVOBAREFOOT Experience Store in London's Covent Garden with your shoes and original receipt.  The store will take payment and send your shoes away for repair.
  2. Send your shoes to the store and we'll take care of everything else. Please call 44 (0) 20 7379 5959 to arrange a repair and make payment.

*Please note, unless faulty, this is a chargeable service

Did you know that up to 70% of the information your brain needs for skilful movement comes from the 200,000 nerves on the soles of your feet? By maximising sensory feedback as your foot touches the ground, you can exploit the abundance of information available to the brain to help you stand, walk and move with optimal skill. Learn more here

Every shoe we make has a patented, ultra-thin, puncture resistant sole which gives you maximum sensory feedback with protection. Learn more here.

We make a range of shoes with different soles so you can ‘live’ barefoot in the city and in nature. Every shoe LETS YOUR FEET DO THEIR NATURAL THING with environment specific grip, upper features and materials. We’ve got you and your kids feet covered for exercise, off-road and everyday with as little sole as possible. For our full range of soles, please view our sole index.

Getting barefoot to the world means that our products must be both well-made and affordable. We offer a range of products, at a range of prices forcing us to produce in a number of locations. One way we try to reduce transportation is to cluster the supply chain as much as we can; making short distances from supplier to factory to port (common in China). Of shipping methods, ocean and rail are the most efficient and least harmful but tend to take much longer. This is another factor in why we only produce two seasons per year.

Things can go wrong. We offer all our customers a 6-month sustainable guarantee on all shoes purchased from Vivobarefoot Ltd. If you have experienced unusual ‘wear and tear’, a fault on your shoe, or it has not held up as it should, please let us know. If you have purchased directly from us within the last 6 months, just show us your proof of purchase, and we would be happy to get a replacement pair out to you.

Due to the popularity of styles, it is not always possible to replace your style with the same piece. However, our customer care team will do their best to ensure you have a new style which will be fit for purpose. Please contact us on 44 (0) 207 048 0600 to resolve any shoe faults.

In the interest of ensuring the same fault does not occur to anyone else, we will usually ask you to send photos of the style, and in some cases to send them back to us. That way, we can work on further testing to prevent anything happening again in the future.

We recommend using natural products where possible for cleaning and weather protection. Construction methods and materials vary across styles and we would recommend using soapy cold water rather than a washing machine for our performance shoes.

In the interest of increasing the lifespan, and appearance of your shoes, we have now partnered with Liquiproof. The innovative spray uses nano-technology to create a protective coating for your shoes, making them liquid repellent. Protect your shoes against spills and splashes with Liquiproof.

Products such as Nikwax for leather are also great!

Yes, you can, a lot of this comes down to personal preference.

If you are not used to wearing socks, then there is no need to wear them with our shoes. However, if you do still want to keep them on, we would recommend a pair of lightweight, non-restrictive socks that may stop any friction and can sometimes help with moisture wicking, preventing sweat and stinky shoes.

If it is cold outside, you will definitely notice the difference by putting in a pair of our Thermal Insoles.

Whether you chose to keep them in on a daily basis is up to you. You tend to get a more barefoot experience if you remove your insoles, but no one’s watching so the decision is yours. Learn more here (Learn more ‘link to attached page for thermal and puncture resistance)

Each shoe will specify on its product page if it comes with our performance insole, everyday cork insole or our Thermal insole. They are also available to buy separately.

If you are new to wearing VIVOBAREFOOT shoes we’d recommend walking before you run and transitioning gradually. It might feel unusual at first, but it’ll be worth it in the long run.

Like any training programme, it takes time to adjust to barefoot movement. You may have sore calves and feet to begin with but this is just the feeling of waking muscles up that may not have had a proper workout in years.

We’d recommend starting slowly; being barefoot where possible and wearing VIVOBAREFOOT shoes for short periods of walking. Your brain will start to adapt quickly and your body will also begin to change too. We’d recommend regularly doing toe exercises, little and often. In time you should get stronger feet, increased ankle mobility, improved posture and better balance and a new found sense of connection with the ground.

We have lots more information on natural movement here.

Natural moement starts with the feet.

The big toe or 'Great Toe' is our body's natural anchor and pivot. Healthy toes are vital for healthy feet, which are vital for healthy, natural movement. A study, carried out by Scientists in Taiwan, (Chou et al 2008) suggests that even the smallest of restrictions on our big toe can have an impact on our balance and fine motor skills.

By following our Toe-ga exercises should be performed daily to improve mobility, flexibility and strength in the ankle, feet and toes. Do them twice a day if possible and give yourself 5–10 minutes to complete the exercises, the longer the better. Daily Toe-ga strengthens your toes and helps the mobility in your arch and ankles, to help your feet gain strength and mobility needed to move as nature intended. Every shoe we make is flat & wide and thin & flexible and designed to let your feet do its thing

To read more on Toe-Ga, click here to find the exercises you'll need to practice.

Born to Run is an independent education business owned and run by Lee Saxby.  Vivobarefoot helped set it up by transferring the assets from the Training Clinic to Born to Run.  Vivobarefoot are happy to have Born to Run as the preferred education partner and Lee Saxby as a consultant to the brand advising on bio-mechanics and helping create Edu-tainment content.

If you have a medical history of injury and pain with compromised foot function, you might find the transition process more difficult than others.

You have probably been wearing conventional shoes and or corrective footwear or orthotics for quite some time. If this is the case, the function and anatomy of the foot is likely to be compromised and therefore we recommend that your transition to ‘barefoot’ should be supervised by a medical professional.

We strongly suggest you start by using our shoes for everything except long walks and running. For this, please refer to our Everyday collection of shoes.

As with most companies, you may find that your size varies depending on which style of shoe you choose. The main reason for this tends to be down to the materials used, and the actual construction. You may find our Handcut Leather collection seems slightly smaller, this is normally down to the initial tightness of the leather, compared to a flexible mesh running shoe.

Insoles! If you take the insoles out, you find they will play a large part in terms of the room your foot has. If you shoe feels a little tight, remove the insole and you will likely have the right size for your foot.

Yes, we would suggest you use the same principle with our shoes. We call this ‘the rule of thumb’. Your toes should have enough room to wiggle and move. This is especially important when you are running. If you can get your thumb in-between your end toe and the front of the shoe, it should be the right size. Please click here to refer to our size guide.
