First off, the construction is top notch. I work in the woods conducting CRM surveys, and I require a good hiking boot to work efficiently. Within the past year, I've transitioned completely to minimalist footwear, and Vivo has offered a good product line so far. However, as others have noted, the toe box in this model is slightly restrictive. I feel this is mostly due to the excess padding on the sides and top of the boot. I normally wear a size 41 (Ra's and Neo's) but I will be returning these for a size 42. I tried even taking out the insoles and wearing thin running socks, but the toe room was still lacking. With hiking socks (that I always wear with my boots) there is not nearly enough room. The heal is pretty stiff and tight, so hopefully this will be fixed by moving up a size. Otherwise, these boots feel nice and sturdy. I think they will hold up to a good amount of abuse, which is exactly what I need. After I get the correct size, I'll write a follow up.
I bought these boots for my winter working season in the French Alpes because I wanted a zero drop minimalist shoe and not have to go back to normal winter shoes.
Pros: light weight, waterproof, good grip
Cons: sole could be more flexible
Note: I for temperatures above 10ºC you can use them without the insole. For temps -3 to 10ºC run them with the insole. For temperatures below -3ºC I'd recommend getting a wool lined insole to substitute the original because even with thick socks your feet will freeze.
PS: If you are going to be using them mainly in snowy conditions make sure to add plenty of grease because the leather will take a hell of a beating!
I spent ages trying to find some rugged walking boots that were barefoot in principle.-These are the boots. Long muddy wet walks and my feet are dry and my Achilles are fine. I LOVE THEM!!!
The toe box is too narrow. I even ordered one size larger. I had to send mine back. Please make a version with a wider toebox, ASAP and I will purchase. Otherwise it is a well constructed boot. Exactly what I was looking for. I also had to return a pair of Neo's that were also too narrow in the toe box. I now own four pairs of Vivobarefoot shoes: 2 pairs Ra's, I pair of Aqua lites, and a pair of Dharma's. All of them fit perfect with enough room in the toe box.
Although the idea of a minimalist "barefoot" hiking boot is great, it's pretty clear that Terra Plana hasn't quite done it with this Vivobarefoot boot. It's really, really stiff, which really defeats the purpose, and for those with very wide feet the toebox may be just a hair too small. Kudos for effort, though.
