I've gone through multi-year periods of wearing Birkenstocks, flip-flops, Crocs, Vibram FiveFingers, and more recently Vivobarefoot. I've been wearing one style or the other of Vivobarefoot for the last 5 years. I love my Breatho Trail shoes, I've got three of the four colors, and wear them every day. I can certainly understand how the "barefoot" form factor may not suit everyone, but if you're looking to achieve a natural gait then give these a try. They're comfortable, lightweight, and very breathable.
These became my favourite shoes ever as soon as I put them on. Very comfortable and very light, with a spacious toe box and an excellent fit on the upper foot. The lugs seem a bit strange at first, but you quickly get used to them and they give great traction and control on all sorts of terrain, from muddy inclines to rocky trails to paved pathways. (The only exception I found was wet pavement littered with autumn leaves -- these shoes were treacherous.) They breathe wonderfully, and they seem to dry instantly after an encounter with a deep puddle, snow melt, or a small stream. They clean up easily, too, and I think they look really good -- my wife got a pair just to wear as casual shoes.
My only real disappointment with these shoes is that, with only 140 miles on them, the upper on both shoes has worn through on the outside, near the pinky toe, where it creases during your stride. I don't think that will put me off getting another pair, though, when these finally give up the ghost -- I like them that much.
Love these shoes! At first I felt the lugs through the thin sole and it was a little odd but now I like it. I've been wearing mine for five months - all summer and into the fall. They are the closest to barefoot I have found, much better ground feel than my Merril Trail Gloves and more room all around for my foot to open up. Kind of like a breathable, all-terrain mocassin. The lug pattern gives excellent hook-up on the trail whether it's soft ground or on bare rock. The mesh has very good ventilation, does not keep any water out but dries fast too. I'll have to get the Neo style for the fall. These are my favorite shoes, I wear them everywhere I can't go barefoot. I love being able to feel the surface I'm walking on. Now that it's cool out I find a pair of thin wool socks works well, and when it's cold ragg wool socks.
These barefoot style shoes have changed my whole outlook and my physical health. No more knee or back pain, no more shin splints when I run, heck, running is easier and fun now, like when I was a kid. I am very aware of my feet these days, walking on different surfaces is fun / interesting. My wife commented on how my feet are much wider (she calls them paws or Hobbit feet). I'm an engineer and I think our feet are supposed to be able to spread out and absorb the load. Confining shoes feel strange now.
These shoes are highly reccommended. As for me I'm never going back to thick soles and heavy shoes.
I returned these after 1 run and 1 hike. They're crazy uncomfortable and the lugs on the soles make the footbed feel really really weird. Def. not a fan at all.
I have a pair of neos 43 size (my normal shoe size) which are perfect but a tad on the large size. When ordering the breatho, I took the advice on this page and went down a size. However the shoe is significantly smaller - too small for me and unless I am imagining it, the toe box also narrower than the Neo. I had read the soles were identical.
This is not a complaint as I love the Neos but a bit of feedback on sizing for others wondering what size to go for.
Not having worn the breathos I am rating this 5 star based on my neos.
A side request for the Vivo web developers - white type on light grey background is not easy to read when posting a review
