How are we thinking about our planet and our people?
Over 300 million shoes from the US alone end up in landfills each year and we are committed to making shoes that last, both in style and quality. We use as many recycled materials as possible. We minimise the amount of glue by using stitched constructions. Where we have to use glue, our factories try to use water-based adhesives. When that’s not possible, we always choose the most eco-friendly option and put time into researching alternatives. Vegetable tanned leather reduces the amount of toxins and heavy metals needed in a normal tanning process. Our leather is prepared using vegetable extracts to create rich and beautiful colours.
Essential to our factoring sourcing process, we insist on maintaining face to face relationships - as a UK based company with factories stretching from Portugal to China, via Ethiopia and Cambodia, it would be easy enough to conduct all business via phone and email. We insisnt on these close relationships as we feel its the only way to make our shoes the way we do - to the high standards required to make our soft, flexible shoes. All our factories are independently audited by international Non-governmental organization (NGO), to the very highest international labour and environmental standards. Our main tannery partner is rated ISO 14001 (the highest international environmental accreditation available). Our office in China monitor and work closely with our suppliers on a daily basis and are joined frequently by members of the UK design and development team to ensure both high standards of shoe production and working conditions.
We make our shoes lightweight, with modern automated processes where possible and make sure they are durable and as fit for purpose. Long lasting shoes that you want to wear and are good for your body we believe are sustainable for self, others and the plannet. All that said, this is an ongoing process and with every shoe we learn more and strive to do things better. By making our shoes as lightweight as possible we increase their eco-matrix rating. An essential component of eco-design is weight – light shoes use less carbon to ship around the world. We source components local to the factories where our shoes are made in order to minimise transportation and reduce our carbon footprint.
We have been working directly with our factories in China for five years and all of them are independently audited by international Non-governmental organization (NGO), to the very highest international labour and environmental standards. Our main tannery partner is rated ISO 14001 (the highest international environmental accreditation available).
