Going beyond the ultimate and into the Jungle
May 16, 2013 by Jamie Page
Starting at over 10,000ft in the Cloud Forest, in the Peruvian Andes, the Jungle Ultra marathon commences in just over a week. The 230km, 6 day, 5-stage race winds through the dense tropical forests on the Amazon, where the competitors will experience up to 35°C heat and 100% humidity in the diverse environment. The entrants have to be self-sufficient over the course of the distance and carry all their gear; hammock, sleeping bag, food and supplies for the entire race.
Here at VIVOBAREFOOT we like a challenge so we decided to partner with Beyond the Ultimate, the race organisers, and take on this extreme ultra marathon. The winner of the race will receive shoes for a year and we’re also supplying the race officials and staff with our barefoot trail shoes – as well as many of the competitors.
The Jungle Ultra is one of the toughest ultra races on the planet and we felt it would be a perfect match for our barefoot trail shoes. A perfect environment for the competitors to not only connect with nature but also connect with themselves. Our trail shoes all feature our patented ultra-thin, puncture-resistant sole technology and our infamous off-road lugs that give unprecedented grip as well as that characteristic barefoot feeling. We reckon VIVOBAREFOOT have the perfect Jungle Ultra marathon shoe.
Luckily for us, I will be going out to Peru and into the jungle, to compete in the ultra marathon and put our trail shoes through their paces. I’ll be taking the Breatho Trails back to nature and into the wild and as well as one of our brand new trail shoes (which are still in development).
Putting our philosophy of modern technology, ancient wisdom to a very real test.
You can follow the Jungle Ultra and get live updates from the Jungle. The Beyond the Ultimate online app will be regularly updated with updates, images and video from the jungle.
