VIVOBAREFOOT at the Eden Project Marathon

October 13, 2011 by Jamie Page

A trip to the Cornwall seldom fails to disappoint and this weekend was no exception. This years's Eden Project Half and Full Marathon held on Sunday 9th October 2011, brought thousands of keen runners to the South West corner of the UK. VIVOBAREFOOT were lucky enough to be asked to sponsor the event. When we heard about the opportunity to run through the world-famous Eden Biomes and outdoor gardens, we could not have been more excited. Four of us from VIVOBAREFOOT travelled down from our Head Office in London to take part in the half marathon.

After an eventful journey using many different forms of transport Team VIVOBAREFOOT eventually found itself in the town of St Blazey in Southern Cornwall.  Only taking a moment to put up our pop up tents we wandered down to the local pub to do a little Tarahumara style pre-race warming up.  It turned out that it was the closing night of the pub before new owners took over, so the locals were also enjoying something of a celebration.

What followed was riot of ale, beer, scrumpy and too many shorts to count, all mixed up with a lot of laughter, a touch of dancing and a bag load of local characters.

By midnight we were weaving our way down country lanes in search of tents and a good night sleep.

We woke up at the crack of dawn, raring to get on with the race.
The first few miles of the race were mainly off-road and the Neo Trail, the shoe of choice for three out of the four of us, were perfect for the muddy, un-even conditions. At around mile four we spotted BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, he looked like he was enjoying the hills as much as everyone else so, we naturally asked for a photo and he kindly obliged.

To say the Eden Marathon is a "challenge" is an understatement. The rolling hills were relentless and by the mid point of the race the constant climbs and downhills were taking their toll on everyone. We dealt with the tough and rough terrain by making sure we kept to Lee Saxby's running mantra; maintaining posture, rhythm and relaxation.

As we drew nearer and nearer the finishing line the thought of a Pasty and a Pint become more and more exciting. And as we began the final decent towards the Eden biomes and importantly the finishing line, the four of us took off our shoes and did the last two miles barefoot. With the crowd cheering us on  for the final stretch and the odd look of disbelief that we were barefoot;  it was a great way to end a great race and a great weekend.

Congratulations for everyone who completed the the half and full marathon, especially the VIVOBAREFOOT/barefoot runners we bumped in to over the weekend. Thank you to all of the Eden Staff and Marathon Volunteers that made the race possible and for including us, VIVOBAREFOOT.
