I wrote a glowing review of these shoes before. But vivo deleted it!! First time for everything.
What I said previously was, they do get some getting used to. You will get blisters for the first week. But after that, there is nothing that comes close in terms of comfort and convenience, provided the weather is warm. Love them. Love them. Love them.
Since I wrote that review, I went to a 2 week safari of Africa. The only foot wear I brought with me was one pair of Achilles!! A bit of a risk, but hey, I believe in travelling light, and this was as light as you could get. Here is what I found:
Great shoe to 'live' in.
If you walk around on the massi mara, there are lots of sharp grit and thorns. These will get into your shoe, and make treking off road impossible in an open shoe like the Achilles.
Supper strong mosquito repellant will damage the finish of the shoe. So take them off before spraying yourself.
Put the strap in so that the velcro is on the inside of the shoe. This will stop the strap slipping round as you walk.
So in summary, next time I will bring a pair of closed shoes if I know there will be sharp grit or thorns. But I don't see VFF doing any better under those extreme conditions. So it will have to be more 'conventional' vivos in the luggage.
Vivo, please don't delete my review again :-)
I should have honestly paid more attentiion to the other reviews. The first thing you feel when you put them on is the seperation between the big toe and the other toes. At first it doesn't feel like it will be a problem and they actually feel comfortable at first. After simply walking around in them for a few minutes it became obvious that there was no way I was going to run in them. After a few more minutes I couldn't wait to take them off. The rubber flexed in a way to rub the top of my foot raw and the seperation between the toes gave me a nasty bruise after walking in them a total of 20 minutes. This may be a good shoe if it was made with soft leather on top instead of hard rubber and didn't have such a rigid divide between the toes.
Light, very minimal and comfortable. The best product around for me.
Either the toe-split is way too big, or the elastic strap is way too short. Either way, that keen slit that make it look like a ninja shoe only seems to prevent my feet from functioning naturally while trying to separate my big toe from the rest of my foot. .
Superb shoe. Hurt the first time I wore them, but your skin soon gets used to it. The strap is great, but mine has started to fall to bits after only a few months of wear. The white version gets a bit grotty, and dye from my jeans has turned them a strange shade of blue. Only minor gripes. Still love this shoe.
