“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” – Helen Keller
Call me a woman who can’t be kept down for long. I had given up walking for exercise and enjoyment a while back when I was diagnosed with a neurological problem that threw off my balance and made my legs and feet numb. My feet wobbled in my shoes and walking my usual urban paths was what I imagined a stroll on a tightrope would be like. My dream to revisit Italy was out. The trip to London was out. I started avoiding the whole walking thing. But I missed striding around the neighborhood and missed the freedom of heading out on an urban path. Would I ever see Europe except in photos? Not at this rate. I decided to become a walker again.
Tim Brennan, childhood friend of Galahad Clark, talks to us about the resurgence of barefoot running and reveals the origins of VIVOBAREFOOT. In a series of articles he explains how he came to the idea of “hacking up” his Nikes in search of a truly barefoot shoe.
One of the major landmarks was the barefoot cover story on Nature magazine in January 2010.
That was the point where journalists started to bang the drum about barefoot running.
But why now?
“The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow, if I can, pursuing it with eager feet. Until it joins some larger way where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.”
- J.R.R. Tolkien
This song reminds me of the pilgrimage that my brothers and I did last summer. It has a been a tradition in our family to travel St. James’ Way El camino de Santiago when one reaches the age of fifteen. Last summer it was the turn of my youngest brother.
