Hi, I would love to win a 1:1 with Lee Saxby. I have been suffering from achilles Tendonitis (I think) during the last four months. It is only my right heal which is inflamed at the moment. The problem seems to get worse if I try to run so I am currently focussing on stretching my feet and calf muscles. Thanks Lea

I’ve been running barefoot / minimalist for a few years now. Last year I had a pretty bad right knee injury that kept me from running for several months. I’ve gotten past that, but I still have an issue that whenever I go completely barefoot, I get fairly bad blisters on my left foot.

    Comment by Andrew Hyatt — September 13, 2011 @ 2:35 pm

  7. Tuck

I’ve had consistent problems with my right leg, ITB, AT, and blistering. Many long runs result in an injury.

Right foot, no problems. Left foot always ends up with pain in ball of foot. Almost 2 years running barefoot.

  10. Erin Frost

I ran the Brooklyn half marathon in May 2009. But I was getting really bad shin splints, so I switched to Vibrams in June 2010. Since then I can’t run more than 4miles (and that’s a good run) because of severe tightness and pain in my calves, my ankles, my shins and my feet. I also have pins and needles in my lower legs and feet. I deferred running the NYC marathon this year bc of the pain. I started Yoga – which helps. My husband tweeked one thing about my stride a couple of weeks ago and it helped. I”m certain there are other tips that could help. I’ve wanted a running coach for awhile, so when i saw that the barefoot weekend fell on my bday I registered! A 1 : 1 session would be the perfect gift!

A bone graft in my right knee in ’09 allowed me to run again at 52. Now I’m struggling to master bf running. Right calf soreness, bleeding feet haven’t stopped me, but I need some advice on my form.

  12. Ira Rohde

I’m 52; I’ve been doing at least one barefoot run , sometimes shorter, in the winter, sometimes longer, per week over the past two years. I’m doing pretty well, but I’d love to get some coaching help. I’ve been tweaking my form a bit myself lately, since I’ve experienced some blistering on the instep of the ball of the right foot over longer distances or when I get “dishpan feet” during wet conditions. My hunch has been that I’m landing too much on the instep side of that foot. When I deliberately try to land more evenly on both edges or when I pay more attention to the outside edge of that foot I seem to avoid the blistering. I’d love to check this out a little more scientifically and talk about what we used to call “pronation” and “supination” and weight distribution, even or uneven, on the instep edge and the outer edge, in the barefoot runner’s stride.

1st month or 2 in minimal shoes were great; now have a sore heel on one foot and a very tender calf on the other after starting 5-6mi runs.

  14. Olly

A relatively new runner (a year), and already injured my knee so I could not walk. Physio said it was caused by a collapsed arch, so had orthotics. This started to help, then changed to minimal footwear, got a stress fracture, now running barefoot, but can’t seem to get my distance up without blisters-bad form?

    Comment by Olly — September 13, 2011 @ 3:48 pm

  15. Rayna

stopped running from hip and knee pain as well as psoas stiffness. would like to start again without pain.

  16. Trisha Reeves

BF/M runner for 1 year, had foot pain after a tricky 10k, in June. No SFX, but no real healing in 2 months. Finally met a sports pod and it’s severe intrinsic muscle strain. Apparently you can do TMTS after 1 year. Would love to get some fine tuning in my form, I need it so I can avoid this happening again.

  17. Lindsey

I have been running on and off with knee problems for about 4 years. The VFFs seem to help somewhat, but last year (at the Barefoot Run no less) I again hurt my knee very badly and couldn’t run for a few months subsequently. I’ve been building up mileage since then, but I fear another knee injury is inevitable. Help me!!!

I am from Spain and i am registered. My english is not that tecnical from a Medical Point of view, but i just started running barefoot (VFF) 3 months ago. I started running 7 months ago, so my experince running or runnign barefoot is NONE. I had pain on feet, ankles and knees but i believe on barefoot running. Of course i would like to teach mi new technique to firends back in my country. Did I qualify for a Candidate? ;) Hope so, thanks…

  23. Roz

I am an injured runner, who is struggling to grasp the barefoot technique. Although I’ve run barefoot for many summers on the beach, until recently everytime I attempted to run shod in the newest and best footware, I have consistently reinjured my left plantar’s facia. So painfull was the injury that a marathon cancellation and six months of no running later, I finally put two and two together and have wholeheartedly jumped aboard the barefoot movement, now if only I knew the proper form…help!

Been a VivoBarefoot wearer for years. Recently started running barefoot. I can go distances, but have very severe calf pain the next day. It doesn’t hurt when I run, but lingers afterwards. Please help!

Brooks Beasts, custom orthotics, & yet, shin splints & ankle issues persist. 2 months in the Dylans, and I’m feeling stronger already. No running yet, though. That’s where Dr Saxby comes in! ; )

ITB issues curtailed endurance youth. Eventually ‘corrective’ shoes helped until a stress fracture in the first metatarsal. Even after healed had shadow pain. Learned Pose Technique but still struggle with back to back days and any tempo.

Came down with plantar fasicitis weeks before my first half-marathon. Haven’t been able to get back to running despite PT, meds, yoga and even a new pair of shoes with arch support. Have been advised against running due to it’s impact…. Need help!!!

  28. CL

I strained my knee (MCL) learning to run in combat boots, many years ago, and the doctor said to never run again. I sprained my ankle flying off a horse (or more accurately, when landing) a few years ago. I’ve been running since December, barefoot since March. Barefoot running is therapeutic, and I’d love to make it more so, and move beyond the lingering pain.

I have an MRI confirmed ACL tear and complex tear of the medial meniscus. I always loved to run, but now very difficult. I believe that proper exercise is restorative to the body, and I believe that proper running is a natural and potentially restorative act. I ran thru my time in the Marine Corps and after,, I would love to get back to it. I believe with the proper form, running can help heal my body. Lets get this done !! Thank you, Stan

I need the most help, because I have the most length for something to go wrong! I’m 6’9, 280lb, and played basketball my whole life through college. By the end of my career, I developed chronic knee pain from years of running and jumping in normal shoes. I’ve been wearing VFF’s for a year, and am eager to learn the BEST mechanics to ensure I can run for years to come!

  33. Marc Meyer

Headed back to Iraq in October for my second tour – this time equipped with my Vivo’s! After my last tour I was in a motorcycle accident (run off the road by a DC driver one week after returning from overseas) and now I suffer from chronic low back and spinal pain. If I get the barefoot technique/form down I know I can run pain/injury-free over my next year in Baghdad.

Would love a clinic. Have been running bare for 2 yrs. Participated in the 1st Annual NYC Barefoot Run last year and will again this year. Four 1/2 marathons (one on a beach). HOWEVER, I’ve had Achilles tendonitis in left heel for about a year. A little progress with PT, but it has certainly cut back my mileage, much to my regret. (I also have several pairs of Vivos …)

I don’t think I’m running incorrectly, but it would be nice to know that I’m doing right. Winter is approaching and I’ll probably be shod, so having a stable form would be ideal.

My current residual shod injury is in the groin area…or hip, as the doctors are referring. A laberal tear has been ruled out as of last week. I’m waiting for the results of yet another MRI, this time of my back. I’ve had a dull ache for several months, with an occasional sharp pain. The podiatrist suggests taking up the elliptical machine. The sports medicine doc reminds me to listen to my body. Run for as long as I can without pain, which has only been 1-3 miles twice a week (unshod). I could use advice on how to help myself run again.

  41. Melissa Bybee

I’ve been running primarily barefoot for 2 years now. I am a triathlete and did all of my races in 2010 unshod. What I didn’t (and couldn’t ) anticipate was the shock of running on bare feet after long swims in ice cold water. Inevitably, my feet were still numb at the start of the run even after miles on the bike. In the fall of 2010, I ran on numb feet and compromised the metatarsals in the left foot. The next weekend, while participating in a half ironman, I had to cut the run short after 2 miles after fracturing a metatarsal. I am now back to running 12-16 miles a week, including trail runs, all barefoot, and it is going well. However, from time to time, I’ll do something to aggravate the injury. When I feel soreness, I back off for a bit (avoid long distances, stay away from the hills, etc.) and I’m fine. I’d like some coaching to make sure I’m doing everything I can/should to avoid repeated injury. Other than this foot, my body is doing a nice job of finding its way.

1 1/2 years wearing Bikilas for walking, 3-4 miles a day, but afraid to run since I still have pain in my right third toe–Morton’s neuroma?–and don’t want to make anything worse by running incorrectly. As soon as I really know what I’m doing, I’ll be off!

  44. Tom

Achilles tendinitis for the past 5 months after a 10K. Have only been running in minimal shoes for past year. Before that was a horrible heel striker and rarely ran because of knee pain. Was up to 7 miles comfortably at my peak in July until recent achillies pain which has sidelined me from running and now going to PT. Pain is never during running only after rest. Help Me, I want to run again!!

I’m an example of what can go awry when you fail to follow BF transition guidelines: 2nd met stress fx. i’d like to be a model of proper transition and form for my run group.

Love running, miss the freedom of running injury free. Persistent plantar fasciitis for over 2 years now. Also pain in my hamstring and tight calves. Would greatly appreciate help!

  47. Christopher

I spent last year reading and studing everything I could find, to include Pose and Ken Bob’s writing. This year I switched completely to barefoot and started at zero. My cronic knee pain is gone from the first step and I love the barefoot feeling that I haven’t had since high school. I’ve not had any problems with my feet, but I just can’t seem to cure a pain on the inside of my left heel. It doesn’t seem to be Achilles and stretching doesn’t help. I’m desperate to figure this out before it worsens (it doesn’t go away even after rest).
I primarily run pushing my disabled son in events raising funds for special needs causes. He’s approximately 75 lbs to push and I’ve never been able to determine if this has contributed to my pain or changed my form for the worse. Any guidance on form would make my trip from Pittsburgh worth every hour.
    Thank you,
    Christopher

I am a sport med physical therapist that has had surgery on both knees and both shoulders as well as chronic back pain, torn achilles etc. I’ve been doing well the BF running but have struggled lately with increasing distance and speed. I am a huge advocate of barefoot running/training, a 1 on 1 session would not only benefit me but also all of my runners/athletes that I treat in clinic. I really hope that I get this training session.
