Barefoot Marathon Runner praises VivoBarefoot

July 28th 2008 by Terra Plana

Yanni Papastavrou,  (Barefoot Runner and Research Medical Physicist from University College London Hospital, London, UK) got in touch with us to talk about his love of Vivos.

"Running barefoot lets me train for and run marathons without the chronic and painful knee injuries I suffered when wearing trainers. In my experience, barefoot is best. When I am not running I wear Vivos: they're the next best thing to being barefoot.

I got my first pair of Vivos when I was adapting to running barefoot, in the autumn of 2004. I used them as a means of stimulating and strengthening my feet when not running.

The ultra thin, puncture-resistant Vivo Barefoot sole allows me to feel the ground for feedback and allow my foot the full range of natural movement. Whenever I wear rigid-soled shoes, my movement seems lifeless and awkward, compared to the liberating, stimulating and agile experience of being barefoot.

As well as allowing me to feel the ground, my Vivos conform to the shape of my foot.  In contrast, it feels like traditional shoes try to force my foot to conform to the whims of the shoe designer. In this aspect too, I appreciate the way that Vivos work with, not against, the natural functioning of the foot.

Lacking any raised heel, my Vivos naturally encourage me to walk fully upright, like a modern human is supposed to walk, unlike the stooped walking of our ape-like ancestors. Most other shoes, with their raised heel and rigid sole make walking upright a challenge: they're a clumsy step backwards through millions of years of evolution, simply by wearing the wrong shoes.

I have worn many different Vivos over the years. At the moment, I particularly like the Root, both for the comfort and also for the relaxed look. I've removed the inserts to make the shoes even lighter and more comfortable.  I'm really looking forward to trying the Vivo Barefoot sandal next summer."

Terra Plana impress at Bread & Butter Barcelona

July 10th 2008 by Terra Plana

Terra Plana launched its new Spring Summer collection at Bread & Butter Barcelona last week. The new collection was received with gasps of awe! From platforms to flats, from smart to casual, from street to beach; we have got it all! It’ll be a while until they hit the stores but rest assured that in 2009 Terra Plana will be a hit on every high street in the land!

On the Dopie stand things were looking great too; a true wall of colour! When we gave them out at the end it was like feeding time down at London Zoo – a proper scrum down free for all! You’ll be glad to know that all TP employees returned with limbs intact although with a few more bruises than when they arrived…..Happy Days!!

Alexander Technique Teacher evangelises about Vivo Barefoot

June 25th 2008 by Terra Plana

Terra Plana received some great feedback from an Alexander Technique teacher in the USA…..

"My name is Jon Bernie: I'm 55 years old and live in San Francisco. I went into private practice as an Alexander Technique teacher in 1981 and have been very active and althletic my whole life.

I recently heard about Vivo Barefoot shoes made by Terra Plana (these shoes were designed by a tennis player to avoid ankle injuries and are engineered to meet International Podiatry Approval – FIP). I ordered a pair and have experienced an extraordinary change for the better in my overall health and well being. It really is incredible how much better I feel wearing these shoes! I actually feel like I'm walking for the first time in my life and that walking, especially walking up hills is a full body exercise. I feel like my feet, calves, thighs, knees, hips and back are integrated in a way they have never been before. The shoes I mostly wore were Asics running shoes, and when I put them on now, they feel 'wrong': effort is distributed throughout my structure in such a way that creates strain patterns and instability in my structure. Since I've worn the Vivos, I haven't needed to see my chiropractor; I feel much stronger and more stable structurally.

I was inspired to write to you from my personal experience to offer another perspective from the need for supprt from structured shoes: I was told that my whole life, from early childhood, and I would say that that perspective most likely caused me more structural problems than I care to remember. When I strated wearing the Vivos, I felt as if my feet had been waiting their whole life for these shoes."
