Terra Plana loves quilts – read all about it….

November 20th 2008 by Terra Plana

At Terra Plana, we have been using the Saami quilts in our footwear production since Autumn 2005. The Saami are semi nomadic people, living in the desert of Sindh, Pakistan. In an area where quilt making is very common amongst all communities, the Saami have been making their quilts from vibrant & unique cotton scraps and patches which makes them very distinctive from the rest. This is what the Saami people say gives the quilt life.

 Terra Plana Quilts

There is no organised production as the quilts are produced in family groups, hence it is never predictable what you will find on a buying trip and it's the Saami people who decide when to make and when to sell them.

For Autumn/Winter 2008 we have several styles featuring these quilts, including Janis, Tana, Maple, Lauren, Juniper and Patch.

Soul Of Africa and NEXT team up to make T-shirts

November 13th 2008 by Terra Plana

Soul of Africa and NEXT are working together to achieve internationally acceptable quality manufacturing for a fair price, creating much needed employment for the women of the poorest townships.

These Soul Of Africa T-shirts are 100% cotton, made in South Africa from South African cotton, and designed by Next. The T-shirts are machine printed and machine appliqued. They are then sent out to the sewing centres in South Africa to be hand beaded by the previously unemployed women who have been trained in their skills by Soul Of Africa.

Available exclusively from NEXT; click here to buy online.

Terra Plana New Store Opening – Westfield London

October 30th 2008 by Terra Plana

Terra Plana is excited to announce the opening of a new retail store in Westfield, West London. Come and see us soon!

Terra Plana, Unit 2012 (2nd Floor), Westfield, London W12

Opening hours: Monday – Saturday 9am-10pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm

The store features an exciting new layout and shelving system called FOLDZ, co-designed by Asher Clark, Terra Plana's shoe designer and George Saunders-Singer (of Hotcakes).

Terra Plana (Eco footwear brand of the year 2007 – Observer Magazine) has set a new bench mark for sustainable shop fits: FOLDZ, the most sustainable retail concept in the world; a unique patented concept premiering at Westfield on October 30th 2008.

"The simple, innovative, modular design has a unique and beautiful aesthetic which magnifies Terra Plana's progress towards sustainability."

Galahad Clark, MD, Terra Plana.

The ‘FOLDZ' concept is inspired by the eco system where nothing is permanent and design evolves organically to best suit its surroundings. The shell is made from individual and replaceable panels of pre-drilled FSC certified wood creating a giant matrix of holes. Using 6 recycled plastic rivets, each cardboard shelf effortlessly attaches to the pegboard shell to create a fully modular and original retail landscape. The fully changeable and recyclable shelves on the walls are dynamic & efficient allowing for a completely new shop layout every season with minimal costs and effect to the environment.

Lead by the "plug in pull out" nature of the Foldz system, the lighting system, adaptable display units, furniture, walls and shelves are all fully flexible and replaceable. No Glue, No nails, No fuss!

Click on the images below to enlarge the plans and FOLDZ concept:

The store will also feature one wall of sister brand United Nude. In keeping with the spirit of the store, the iconic UN light boxes have been made from a single piece of folded card that also plug into the peg board, and have a product by product LED lighting system.

The full range of Autumn Winter 08 collections from Terra Plana, VivoBarefoot and United Nude will be available, along with shoes and accessories from Worn Again, Dopie, Po-Zu, Where, A Bag and Amoosi.

Westfield is not only one of the most exciting retail developments this year, it also benefits from some features that make it more eco-friendly:

A third of the roof is carpeted in a green, bio diverse material offering natural insulation and an eco-friendly habitat to flora and fauna. Higher standards of energy efficiency and low carbon emissions have been built in to Westfield London to reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 24% against the originally consented scheme.

The design of the glazed roof will provide excellent natural light to public areas whilst also controlling heat build up from solar gain. Materials selection for Westfield London includes requirements by contractors to select timber from auditable sustainable sources and the inclusion of 50% recycled material (where appropriate) in construction material.

Water efficiency is a key factor in the selection of water fittings for Westfield London, and green/brown roofs and rainwater harvesting are used. Appropriate facilities for waste separation and recycling in waste rooms are incorporated into the design.
